Self esteem is important for one's own mental health whether you are in the lifestyle or not. Self esteem is how we perceive ourselves and our place withing this world, not that is necessarily is and seen by others. Those with a high self esteem see themselves worth something, having more respect for oneself and love themselves to a point, which is no bad thing and less susseptible to getting hurt from others.
Where those with a low self esteem usually see themselves as worthless and have no respect for themselves which can lead to them getting hurt by others emotionally and or physically. Our self esteem can affect our friendships, jobs, careers and generally our daily lives in so many ways. It's always healthy to spend a little time now and again reflecting ourselves and looking at the positives about ourselves, because it's human nature to pick at our faults and downfalls and this makes us our own worst critics sadly.
Learning to see the small positives about ourselves will help increase your self esteem, which in turn raises our own self belief, confidence and improving your own mental health. If we do not it leads to a road of depression and anxiety which isn't pleasant for anyone.
It's important to have self esteem within the lifestyle and our community so we can protect ourselves from others who would prey and take advantage of those with a low self esteem, which can be harmful physically and emotionally for oneself or others, the reason our low self esteem can be harmful to others within the lifestyle is because we will find it hard to express our wants, needs and desires as wells as our hard and soft limits and if those are not communicated can be toxic to any dynamic, if they are crossed and not made crystal clear. This can also damage your partner and their own judgements on trust and communication which could cause them to start doubting themselves.
So low self esteem can be toxic for oneself and others, but on the other hand a good dynamic can help nurture and build self esteem for all those involved within that dynamicand take people places they never knew possible, growing more than they could ever imagine which is an amazing journey to be on. But please remember if you rely purely on one person to. Make you happy and make you feel worth something that can also be damaging to those involved, when all it takes is a few minutes here and there to look at ourselves and pick one or two positive things about ourselves, whether it be a body part, personality trait or the nature of your character, those are all valid and important to recognise.
To.truly love another we must love ourselves, to truly trust another we must trust our own judgements, to respect another we need to respect ourselves.
